In Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II, Josef (Bolek Polívka) and Marie Cizek (Anna Šišková) are a couple whose relationship has taken a turn for the worse. To make matters more difficult, they watch in fear and agony as the Wieners, a Jewish family, are kicked out of their home and taken to a concentration camp. Their son, David Wiener (Csonger Kassai), survived the ordeal and finds his way back to the Cizek’s. For them he has one dangerous request—can they house him and hide him from the Nazis? Rather than see him killed, the childless couple agree that David can stay with them, making up a lie that they’re expecting a child and need their spare room for a nursery in order to keep the secret hidden. Marie has always wanted a baby, and hopes a real one will be the answer to her problems and keep David safe. Dealing with constant suspicion and close-calls, they Cizek’s cleverly do all they can to keep David’s hiding a secret, and in the process, learn a lesson in humanity and discover what they’re truly capable of.
